The basic idea is to have a martial knightly-type class that uses both Strength and Intelligence as important ability scores. We have the Warlord as a Leader already, and I think the Cavalier would make a good Defender of this concept.
And, what the hell, I like the concept of an intelligent fighter, so let's add another.
This would be in some ways the Martial version of the paladin, particularly considering I'm envisioning a Defender with Leader-ish capabilities.
Though I'm having trouble coming up with class features that would make it a comparable defender to the fighter without stealing too much from the fighter.
Here's some ideas:
- Marks every attack, as per fighter.
- No free attack against shifting enemies, so as not to step on fighter's toes there.
- Instead make shifting enemies have to use extra movement or standard action or suffer some penalty for shifting, so as to discourage it in a different way than the fighter.
- opportunity attacks don't stop movement, so as not to step on the fighter's toes.
- Intelligence modifier gets added to both the attack roll and damage roll of opportunity attacks. This punishes provoking OAs in a different way than the fighter, and shows off the Cavalier's ability to exploit a weakness (via his intellect).
